Switching to another Microsoft product alone takes three to six months, as processes need to be redefined, data needs to be cleaned up and the migration is quite complex - especially for organizations that have extensively customized, expanded and adapted Project Online over the years. At the same time, the Microsoft alternatives lack some functions and reach their limits when it comes to portfolio management, financial controlling and governance.  <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_text_3 et_pb_text et_pb_bg_layout_light et_pb_module et_block_module preset--module--divi-text--default\"><div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\"><h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_opportunities_of_the_changeover\"><\/span>The opportunities of the changeover<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Project Online is best known for project planning using the waterfall method. It allowed thousands of tasks to be created, dependencies to be linked and resources to be planned precisely. However, the large number of functions often meant that project managers lost track of things or were forced to work with Excel at the same time. In addition, project management software that is limited to the waterfall method no longer reflects today's everyday project work. Instead, the focus is now on collaboration, flexibility and agility, as project and portfolio management often take place in a highly dynamic environment. Projects are created quickly, change constantly and very few projects can still be managed using traditional Gantt plans. In our experience, these alternatives are sufficient for simple projects, but they show weaknesses when it comes to complex programs and large portfolios: <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>No integrated portfolio management<\/li>\n<li>Missing finance and budget modules<\/li>\n<li>Limited integration options outside the Microsoft ecosystem<\/li>\n<li>No natively integrated monitoring &amp; evaluation (M&amp;E)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Even more critical is the option of using the Project Server Subscription Edition, with which Project Online can continue to be used in an on-premise version. This means that the same range of functions is essentially retained. However, this can only be a transitional solution, as it will probably only be supported until 2031 and no further developments will take place.  <\/p>\n<p>Companies that only rely on Microsoft alternatives therefore risk inefficient processes and increasing complexity.
